WNEC Defeats Elms for Second Straight NEWLA Title

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Freshman Kayte Devine scored five goals and sophomore Audrey Kelton had four goals and two assists to lead the top-seeded Golden Bears to an impressive 16-3 victory over Elms College in the championship game of the New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) Tournament Saturday at Golden Bear Stadium.

This was the second straight NEWLA title and third in fourth year for Western New England College who earned an automatic invitation to the NCAA Division III Championship.

Senior Kristin Pimental added four goals and junior Alyson Nowell contributed two goals and an assist as the Golden Bears improved their record to 11-6 with their fifth consecutive victory and second win over the Blazers in five days.

Sophomore Jessica Vogel chipped-in with a goal and assist while junior Shannon Montgomery had two assists. Freshman Melissa Roy had three saves in the first half while junior Tara Cushman stopped five shots in the second half.

The game was tied 1-1 after the opening eight minutes before the Golden Bears tallied nine unanswered goals for a 10-1 lead at intermission.

Sophomores Beth Cahall and Colleen Strunk each had a goal and assist for the Blazers (9-6).
